This presentation showcases Green-Wood Cemetery's comprehensive approach to stormwater management and environmental resilience. Joseph Charap, VP of Landscape, details how this 478-acre National Historic Landmark in Brooklyn transformed a critical flooding challenge into an innovative green infrastructure solution. The presentation documents the cemetery's strategic methodology, beginning with needs identification and data collection, followed by hydrological modeling that revealed significant stormwater discharge impacts on New York City's combined sewer system. Through successful partnerships with NYC DEP's Resilient NYC Partners program and NYS DEC's Green Innovation Grant Program, Green-Wood secured substantial funding to implement a two-phase project spanning 146 acres. The solution includes water retention, permeable paving, an OPTI Continuous Monitoring and Adaptive Control system, and water reuse infrastructure. The presentation emphasizes Green-Wood's collaborative funding strategy, calculated risk-taking in project development, and the importance of understanding organizational strengths and geographic positioning when pursuing environmental initiatives. Construction photos document the complex installation process, demonstrating how historic cemetery operations continued alongside major infrastructure improvements that ultimately reduce combined sewer overflow while creating interpretive opportunities for the community. This presentation seeks to demonstrate how private institutions can serve the public good.
